THE win over Edinburgh City has moved Cowdenbeath into eighth spot in the Ladbrokes League 2 table but now they have to look to follow that success up with wins on the road.

They are at Broadwood this Saturday to face Clyde and then, after the international weekend break, they are at Montrose.

So Cowden have little time to rest on their laurels and manager Liam Fox made it plain this week that the team realise that the win has provided a launchpad.

Leaders Forfar are on nine points with Elgin and Annan on six and Arbroath on five, so Saturday's win was vital but more are needed to get into the top half of the table.

He said: “It was a different sort of pressure on the lads against City, a new team in the division, and I felt for the most part we handled it well.

“In the first period we created a lot of good chances but were unable to get more than one ahead and for a spell in the second-half things got a bit scrappy.

“However, we kept working hard and we got the second goal to make the points safe.”

The manager praised players at the opposite ends of the park in the shape of striker Kris Renton and goalkeeper Dave McGurn.

Mr Fox went on: “It was brilliant that Kris got his first league goal on his league debut and I hope there are many more to come.

“He worked well with Nikolay Todorov and their goalkeeper had a number of good saves.

“Kris was a really dangerous front player at junior level and in the pre-season games he also looked very useful so it was great to see him get his first goal and the way it came.

“He just kept chasing the ball and beat the ‘keeper to it and he earned full marks for keeping pressure on the defence.

“Dave McGurn played his part well. While he did not have a lot to do he did make three or four very good saves and that was why I brought him here because he is a top class ‘keeper.”

Renton was delighted to get his league debut goal: “It was a bit frustrating having to sit out the first two league games through the suspension from the junior ranks and I just could not wait to get going today.

“It was a very difficult game for Edinburgh were a hard working lot but when the chance came I knew I just had to keep chasing the ball and put pressure on the defence and it was tremendous to see the ball roll over the line.

“We know that it is just the start though and we have to go to Clyde this week and look to repeat that winning form.”

The manager agreed: “We need to keep winning to put pressure on the sides above us and that will be the aim at Broadwood.”

He might have centre-half Gerry McLauchlan back after a month out with bruised ribs and link man Burton O’Brien should also be available.
